Being a women of color myself it’s always intriguing to here success stories from other women of color, such as Jackie Thomas. I was amazed that she has worked in journalism for over 30 years and has committed herself to making a difference in the media in regards to minorities in general. After hearing Jackie Thomas speak I was inspired to look for more women of color who have been successful in the media.

Nancy Maynard who is now deceased, was an American publisher, journalist, former owner of The Oakland Tribune and co-founder of Maynard Institute. Nancy Maynard was a positive role model for people of color and committed herself to support minorities who had an interest in the media as a career. Nancy Maynard was one of 50 journalism of color in the 1960’s mije.org/nancy-maynard.

Oprah Winfrey is also a women of color who has made it her business to shine in the media. Oprah is a child of poverty who has fought for everything that she has today she has helped the lives of many and continues to give people of color hope and opportunity. Oprah, of course is known for her talk show, which is highly rated.

Hard work, doing the right thing, dedication, and knowing where you want to go is what is required to be successful. Some people have to work harder and smarter because of the attitudes of others who put up forms of roadblocks, but, with perseverance they will succeed.
